Jiayi's comment on the article: Young and in debt (Wednesday, May 26, 2010 / 9:00 PM)

I feel that many young Singaporeans are really struggling with debts way too early then they should be. This should not be the case as the standard of living in Singapore is getting higher each year and they should starts saving up for rainy days. This is to prevent them from not being able to feed themselves in the future.

The reason that they are facing this financial predicament is because a number of them actually own up to an average of 5 credit cards at a time. Although there are some who says that each card has different privilege, but I would say that most of them admitted to them spending more than they earn.

Most of the Singaporeans spend their money on food, which I guess is quality food like fast food restaurants, Swensens, high class restaurants and much more. Furthermore, youngsters nowadays like to go for branded stuffs like Nike, Adidas, Converse, Prada, Zara and etc. This will make them spend more than the rest and before they knew it, they have overshoot the limit of their credit cards.

Therefore, I feel that Singaporean should start the habit of saving even though it is a small amount, cause a small amount everyday can eventually add up to a huge sum by the end of the year. They can start by saving a portion, probably a quarter from their salaries every month and then slowly increase the amount over time. This is to ensure that they are able to feed for themselves in the future if they are jobless.
