GAYLE'S TAKE ON THE YOUNG IN DEBT! whattt?! (Thursday, May 27, 2010 / 1:30 AM)

I personally think that it is not much of a surprise that younger Singaporeans may be struggling with debt sooner than they actually should. The younger generation now has yet to learn the meaning of hardships and having to suffer without food and water because Singapore has developed over the years and it has become a considerably well to do country. The lack of experience with hardships has caused the younger generation to become more spendthrift as they are oblivious of value of money in difficult times. And by admitting that some spend more than they earn, they are being ‘myopic’ in a way, where they are not thinking ahead, but rather just presently only. Personally, I often am ‘myopic’ in a way whereby which when I get money I quickly spend it, only to realize that at the end of the month, I not only have not save but I am also in need of money again! I think younger Singaporeans just do not yet realize the consequences of their actions that may lead to issues like financial predicament (as stated) sooner or later. The economy is unexpected and no one knows when the possibility of a financial crisis may occur again.(whoo touchwood!) Younger Singaporeans need to start saving and limiting their spending, by reducing the number of credit cards as more often than not, customers, especially younger ones don’t realize how much they’ve spent till they overexceed their credit card(s) limit. Parents should educate their children when of age,on the value of money, asking them to refrain from overspending, especially in the area of food as over eating may also pose as a problem (obesity!) in Singapore in the long run. I actually feel that it all boils down to having wisdom with your finances and seeking financial advice from experienced people. Yet, at the same time never letting money be a source of conflict or problems!
