Sng Christine comment - stamping out drain litter (Monday, May 17, 2010 / 8:26 PM)

I felt that Singapore have to be more aware that whatever they throw into the drain will end up in reservoirs. Litter in Reservoirs will not disappear on its own, it cost PUB quite a sum to clean it up. Singaporean may have the habit of throwing litter into the drain maybe because of when they are young, their parent or people around them are throwing litter into the drain. Therefore, they may felt that it is okay to throw things into the drain.
The campaign will not work instantly. However, it will slowly educate the youth as they will know that throwing litter in the drain is an offence and will pollute the water in the reservoirs. As time pass by, the amount of litter will decrease. There will still be people throwing litter into the drain because not everyone will obey the rule and would continue throwing litter into the drain.
The art competition is a good idea of getting people started to understand that throwing litter into the drain will lead to reservoirs as some people does not know that litter thrown by them will lead to reservoirs and will cost PUB quite a huge sum of money to clean up the rubbish that they had created. If everyone do their part by throwing their rubbish into the dustbin, it will make singapore a cleaner and better place to live in.
